Membership
Whether you are new to Amateur Radio or a long-time operator, the first thing we want anyone interested in membership to understand is the Cactus Intertie System is not your typical local ham radio club. Our system is widespread and somewhat complex in how it operates. This system is not for someone who simply wants to pick up their mic and talk into a single repeater. As a member, you are considered a "control operator" for dozens of repeaters. This means as a member, you must learn how the entire system works and be able to learn how to control the system and its connectivity.
Most people who stumble upon one of our remote base repeaters, don't understand what they have stumbled upon. They often get on the air and ask for a radio check, not understanding they are going into one particular repeater site near them and coming out over a wide area network of repeaters in various states. It is important, if you are seriously considering membership, to take some time and listen to the system. Listen to what people are talking about and truly decide if you desire to become involved in this type of operation. The system offers a unique blend of both technical and personal discussions. Remember as you listen, often members are talking to each other from various locations throughout the United States.
If you decide that Cactus Intertie System membership is for you and membership would offer you the unique aspect of Amateur Radio you desire, we encourage you to listen for the call-signs of the members talking to see if you know someone. With over 500 members the chances are fairly good that you will hear someone you know. However, if you don't know any members, don’t be discouraged. While we prefer you are recommended by a current member who can also serve as a mentor or Elmer, it is not required for membership consideration.
Please understand; we are not trying to discourage anyone from requesting membership into our organization. However, we are seeking potential members who are committed to involving themselves and who understand what our organization is all about. We simply don’t want anyone to join and then shortly thereafter drop out because they did not find satisfaction with our organization. We want you to make the right decision for you and we want individuals who want to be involved in bettering what we do for both our organization and the public services we support.
